SMANIA for the future

SMANIA products will be highly innovative neural interfaces for peripheral and potentially for central nervous system. Aim of a neural interface is to electrically communicate in a selective and bidirectional way with the nervous system. In this way it can be possible to understand human intentions referred to missing limbs movements (as it is for amputees) allowing a dexterous control of external prosthetic devices. The bidirectional communication can make possible even the neural stimulation to give back feedbacks coming from the prosthesis. In this way the amputee could feel the prosthesis as part of his own body. SMANIA products will combine traditional materials and technologies commonly used for invasive neural interfaces (biocompatible polymers, thin film technology, etc.,) with innovative microactuators (i.e. shape memory alloys) which will allow to control the neural interface position after its insertion into peripheral nerves nearing the active sites to neural fibres and thus increasing the eletrical communication quality between the nerve and the electrodes. SMANIA expertise in microtechnology for implantable devices will make SMANIA a perfect partner even for research consortium and for consulting activity in the biomedical field.
